Not just a hotel, it's a story.

A Solid Foundation for the Next Phase
The concrete pouring at Lange Koepoortstraat has been successfully completed, marking an important milestone in the expansion project of The Rubens Antwerp. With this step, the project moves from preparatory works into the structural construction phase.
Concrete pouring is a crucial moment in any building process. The foundation created during this stage will support the entire structure above it, making precision, planning, and quality control essential throughout the operation.
Did you know that concrete takes around 28 days to reach its full strength?
During this curing period, the material gradually hardens and gains the structural capacity needed to safely support the building. Only once this process is complete can the next stages of construction move forward.
With this foundation in place, the next phase of the project can begin. Step by step, the expansion of The Rubens Antwerp continues to take shape, with a strong focus on quality, durability, and careful execution at every stage.
The video shows the concrete pouring process that forms the base of this next chapter in the development of the project.

Archeological Finds
he expansion of The Rubens Antwerp shows how modern hotel development and heritage care can go hand in hand.
During the early works, archaeological research uncovered remarkable traces of the city’s history: historic water wells, everyday pottery, small ointment jars and structures linked to sugar processing in the 16th and 17th centuries. Older layers of habitation and signs of artisanal activity were also recorded. One particularly striking discovery was the remains of a horse, laid to rest on the site centuries ago.
Developing within a historic city centre is about more than building alone. It requires close collaboration between developers, heritage experts and construction partners, with respect for the surroundings, the historical layers beneath the site and careful documentation throughout the process. At The Rubens Antwerp, this approach is not an obligation, but a clear mark of quality.
By taking the time to properly study and record the past, we help create a future that feels authentic, meaningful and deeply connected to the place and one that enhances the experience for every guest.
History

Art and Elegance — A Tribute to Rubens
The design of The Rubens Antwerp is inspired by the work of Pieter Paul Rubens, one of Antwerp’s most important artists. His use of colour, movement and emotion has influenced the way the interiors are shaped and detailed.
Rather than copying his paintings, the hotel translates his spirit into a contemporary setting. The spaces feel warm and welcoming, with a sense of energy and balance. The aim is to create rooms and shared areas that feel comfortable and lived-in, while still reflecting the building’s history and artistic roots.
Our Roots
Just a few steps from the Grote Markt, this site has long been part of Antwerp’s city life. Today known as Hotel Rubens Grote Markt, it is now being carefully transformed into The Rubens Antwerp — a place where the past remains visible while new layers are added.
At the heart of the courtyard stands the Pagadder Tower, dating back to the 16th century. Slightly hidden from the street, it is a rare survivor from a time when Antwerp was a major trading city. Officially recognised as cultural heritage by Flanders, the tower reminds us of the merchants, craftsmen and ships that once shaped the city’s prosperity.

Heritage & Continuity
While not all buildings on this site are protected monuments, the Pagadder Tower holds an important place in Antwerp’s shared memory. Its value lies not only in its stones, but in the stories it carries.
The Rubens Antwerp treats this heritage with care. The project is about finding the right balance between preservation and renewal — allowing history to remain present, while creating a hotel that feels open, welcoming and relevant today. Guests are invited to experience Antwerp through this dialogue between past and present, in a setting defined by calm, character and elegance.
